Yep, we know we are a bit more expensive than some other people selling SCOBYs – but there are good reasons for this.
Our SCOBYs Are Completely Metal Free
A lot of people brew their kombucha in metal which in our opinion is dangerous. The scientific evidence shows that kombucha causes metals like nickel and chromium to leech into the liquid – which you definitely don’t want to drink! SCOBYs respond poorly to metal, and exposure to metals makes it easier for harmful bacteria to take over the good guys. We make sure our SCOBYs never touch metals.
We Never Use Plastic For Brewing
Cheap plastic home brewing kits are popular for a lot of people who sell SCOBYs commercially. Unfortunately these contain a lot of harmful plastic chemical compounds which leech into the kombucha due to the high acidity levels. Because we avoid plastics, our set up is more expensive, however it is totally worth it for BPA, BPS & phthalate free SCOBYs – and uncontaminated kombucha.
Certified Organic Ingredients
We choose tea and raw sugar that are Certified Organic. Big tea brands are often very high pesticides which can be harmful to you and to the SCOBY. Normal sugar also goes through pretty involved chemical processing which we prefer to avoid.
RO Filtered Water
Reverse Osmosis (RO) is the best way to filter out chemicals like chlorine and fluoride from our water supply. These chemicals aren’t good for you and certainly aren’t good for the SCOBY. RO systems are expensive, but we think it is worthwhile in order to have the best SCOBY, and the healthiest kombucha possible.
We Care About Waste
It is cheap and easy to wrap everything in bubble wrap, but we actually care about the plastic waste epidemic around the world. All of our packaging is either recycled from somewhere else or is made from sustainable sources that can be recycled. The only plastic you will get is the vacuum seal pack for the SCOBY – this is nylon which is one of the best materials available. We are trying to eliminate needing to use vacuum seal packs at all in future.
